Why Bring Up Monica?

It was jarring, seemed awkwardly out-of-place and a generation behind the times. Rand Paul bringing up The Monica Lewinsky incident during ‘Meet The Press’ this week.

“One of the workplace laws and rules that I think are good is that bosses shouldn’t prey on young interns in their office,” Paul said. “And I think really the media seems to have given President Clinton a pass on this…”
But what’s his strategy? Why bring up Monica?
It doubtful that it’s just harmless meandering by a deep and thoughtful politician. After all, this is Rand Paul. No, it was a well calibrated attack. He knows that if he reaches the 2016 General Election, Hillary is his likely opponent and he is sure to be a big underdog. So to try to nip that unfriendly match-up in the bud, Paul’s launched this preemptive strike, a shot across the bow, a warning to the Clinton’s of what’s to come if they jump in the 2016 Presidential contest.
The real purpose of bringing the Lewinsky scandal up is intimidation. Paul is letting Hillary and Bill and even Chelsea know that he can and will scrape that scar wide open. It doesn’t have anything to do with women’s rights, it has everything to do with inflicting personal pain. Whether or not it works remains to be seen. At best for Paul, Hillary decides it’s just not worth it and opts not to run. At worst there’s a backlash to his boorish behavior and a crystallization of his reputation as a hatchet man whose cruel policy positions will only be matched by his ruthless campaign style.
