News that Congressman Trey Radel, who pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine, is breaking on
Politico, wire services, and multiple cable news outlets. Radel, who was busted in October for purchasing cocaine from an undercover government agent, will be making the official announcement and notify Speaker John Boehner’s office sometime today. Radel’s situation was contentious: Boehner had been urging Radel to remain in his GOP-leaning House even before Radel entered rehab, but Florida’s Republican Party had called for the congressman to resign shortly after his arrest, and Radel had drawn a viable primary challenger – a sign that they are in fact worried about maintaining their majority following coming November midterm elections.
