Climate Scientist Libel Lawsuit Moves Forward

For some Conservatives, denying the science of Climate Change is not enough.  They also feel compelled to viciously smear those who present evidence of Global Warming.  In 2012, climate scientist Michael Mann was attacked by writers for the National Review and a leading conservative think tank. They claimed he was a fraud and then decided his behavior was on par with serial child molester Jerry Sandusky.

Obviously Mann didn’t take too kindly to that comparison and filed a defamation lawsuit against his tormentors who attempted to hide behind a law that protects journalists from frivolous litigation. However DC Superior Court Judge Frederick Weisberg has now ruled against the motion opening the way for a trial.

Accusing a scientist of conducting his research fraudulently, manipulating his data to achieve a predetermined or political outcome, or purposefully distorting the scientific truth are factual allegations. They go to the heart of scientific integrity. They can be proven true or false. If false, they are defamatory. If made with actual malice, they are actionable.
