It’s not quite “Snowmageddon Meets Polar Vortex”, but another cold snap accompanied by heavy snow is already wreaking havoc with flights east of the Rockies:

Almost 1,500 flights have already been cancelled across the U.S. in advance of a snow storm that is forecast to bury the Northeast and usher in another bone-chilling polar plunge in temperatures.

The brunt of the storm is expected to slam the busy Washington, D.C. – Philadelphia – New York corridor Tuesday with heavy show and brutally cold temperatures. Airlines already cancelled just under 1,500 flights in affected areas as of late Monday evening.

Forecasts are calling for coastal regions to be hit harder than inland areas during the powerful storm, crippling travel at airports, on trains and by car.

Between eight and 12 inches is forecast to fall in coastal regions from New York to Washington, D.C., which would make it the biggest storm to hit the capital in three years.

The double threat storm will also force wind chills well below zero from the nation’s interior out towards the East Coast and the nation’s capital, where residents can expect what could be the most snow since an historic blizzard hit in January 2011.
