Florida Neighbors Unnerved By Backyard Target Practice

Under new rules, Florida residents can shoot targets on their own property. That doesn’t sit well with Sheila Lowe and some of her Lake Worth neighbors.

Lowe was surprised when all of that was shattered this weekend while she was with her favorite horse in her backyard.

“The first gunshot went off and he reared up and almost came back down on top of me and it was just repeatedly, gunshot after gunshot, after gunshot. It just didn’t stop,” Lowe said.

Gunfire — lots of it — coming from a nearby open field. You would expect that kind of noise at an indoor shooting range with strict safety measures and trained professionals nearby.

“We thought it was illegal to shoot in a residential area,” Lowe said.

And that’s the bigger surprise for Shelia.

“I have to fear going out there because they’re shooting large guns. It’s not just shotguns. These kids have big guns out there,” Lowe said.

State statute 790.33: The Florida legislature passed it in 2011. Governor Scott signed it into law. It allows legal gun owners to target practice on their private property, and it trumps county and local rules already on the books.

The property owner shooting targets says the law is on his side and he has no intention of stopping.
