Flushed Down The Toilet
by Gabe Berman
According to the New York Times, Mitt Romney raised $881.8 million which, in turn, forced President Obama to drum up $934 million. And, according to the electoral college, Romney resembled Sonny Liston in his second fight against Muhammed Ali–knocked out cold.
So, what have we learned? The GOP can’t pull the wool over America’s eyes forever. Mitt’s money may talk, but a majority of us stopped listening. We can spot an empty suit from a mile away and voted for continued change instead of a field day for the 1% at our own expense.
What do we still need to learn? We critically need campaign reform. The money wasted on elections has reached a point which can only be described as criminal. If you consider how much is spent on campaigns, from the presidential down to the local levels, we should be embarrassed as a nation. How dare we allow ourselves to squander so excessively when we have citizens who can’t meet their basic needs?
Or maybe we don’t need campaign reform. Maybe we just need a collective change in priorities.
