No Enemies Like Old Enemies
As the attacks between Governor Romney and Speaker Gingrich reach a fevered pitch, one of Gingrich’s oldest rivals in the Republican Party has joined the fray.
[Bob] Dole, who first endorsed Romney back before Christmas, turned both barrels on Gingrich in a long statement today.
“I have not been critical of Newt Gingrich,” Dole’s statement began, “but it is now time to take a stand before it is too late.”
Dole went on to blame Gingrich in part for the losses the GOP suffered in the 1996 Congressional elections. He said the constant stream of Democratic ads featuring Gingrich “did not help me” in the presidential race against Bill Clinton.
Gingrich’s staff fired back.
“Governor Romney isn’t strengthening his case to conservatives by touting endorsements by two moderate Republican presidential nominees who both lost their elections— Senator McCain and Senator Dole,” one Gingrich-supporting DC operative told TPM.
This is so much fun. There is a good chance that tonight’s debate will be the nastiest one yet.
